CCU Tames the Lions of Mount St. Joseph 2-0

CINCINNATI, OH - The NAIA era of CCU men's soccer got off to a sensational start on Thursday evening as the Eagles went on the road to take on the Lions of Mount St. Joseph in a pre-season exhibition.  After a 40 minute defensive struggle, CCU was able to crack the MSJ defense and was awarded a penalty kick after senior all-american Drew Roberts was taken down in the box.  Roberts capitalized on the penalty kick as he struck the back of the net as he went left of the keeper to give CCU a 1-0 advantage.

Just a few minutes later, CCU would capitalize in transition as the Eagles took advantage of a three on two situation.  CCU worked the ball to the middle and found Drew Roberts on the left side of the field with a nice touch pass.  Roberts side stepped the defender and scored with a soft shot that sailed to the right of the keeper to give CCU a 2-0 lead.

The CCU defense would hold on to shutout the Lions.  The defensive effort was led by goalkeeper Thayer Wallace who was brilliant in goal.  The Eagles also benefitted from the strong defensive play of speedy freshmen Nate Dennis and Walter Garcia.

The Eagles will now face Bluffton University next week in their final scrimmage before starting the regular season.
